Fashion Directors are in charge of every aspect of a runway fashion show and/or a photoshoot. The director must coordinate and bring all pieces of the show together, including models, staff, lights, sound, seating and recording of the show. Responsibilities in this role include both the creative and business duties of producing a fashion show. To be a successful fashion director we must be organized, able to make decisions quickly and communicate effectively and have a love of fashion.
The location of a fashion show or photoshoot is chosen in one of two ways. Either the fashion director chooses the location or, for a major event, the location and time of the show is given to the fashion director. In either case, the fashion director scouts the location, noting the advantages and challenges of producing a fashion show/shoot in the space.
The fashion director assists the designers whose clothing graces the runway and choosing the pieces that form the collection seen onstage. Once the pieces for the collection are chosen, the fashion director works with stylists to make sure the outfits are fitted to models and properly accessorized to fit the overall theme of the show.
One of the administrative tasks of a fashion director is to make sure all contracts pertaining to the fashion show are delivered, signed and returned well in advance of the show/shoot. Examples of these contracts include model agreements, lease for the location, equipment rental agreements and insurance for the show/shoot. All of these contracts must be approved in the weeks leading up to the show.
In addition to overseeing the contracts, there are other administrative tasks related to producing a fashion show. The fashion director helps to create the budget for the show/ photoshoot. She also sends the schedule, the schedule for the show/shoot sets the timing for each task related to the production of the show.
